What do you need to know? 🌍

Sur l’usage correct du phrasal verb: “to sign off“.

Avez-vous déjà eu à valider ou approuver un budget, une dépense ou un «go-ahead» pour un projet, une présentation client etc…? Sans doute que oui. Mais comment l’avez-vous dit ?

Une bonne réponse se trouve dans le verbe à particule (phrasal verb) : to sign off et son corollaire nominal : a sign-off. Sous sa forme verbale, vous noterez qu’il est souvent suivi de “on”: to sign off on sth.

Attention cependant ⚡️: signer en bas d’un document se dit “to sign” sans aucune particule ajoutée. On parle alors de l’acte de signer, physiquement. En revanche, si vous utilisez le verbe à particule “to sign off” c’est uniquement pour “valider” ou “approuver” (un contrat, une dépense, etc.), c’est le concept qui est décrit, pas l’acte lui-même de signer. Dans le même ordre d’idée, vous devrez faire attention à l’usage d’un autre verbe à particule: “to sign up” qui signifie “adhérer” (à une idée etc.) ou “s’inscrire” (à une conférence etc.). Là encore, ce verbe à particule ne peut donc pas être utilisé pour exprimer l’action de signer en bas de page…

Notez également qu’en utilisant oralement ledit phrasal verb “to sign up” on exprime son accord sur une proposition (de sortie au cinéma, d’aller prendre un verre etc…) en répondant tout simplement: “Sign me up!” (= OK ça me dit!). Détails à lire ci-dessous:

It implies that you are opting in, sold on, or on board with something. If your friends were talking about going out to eat and it sounded appealing to you, you might say “sign me up!” as a way of saying “that sounds great and I’d like to join.”

A: There’s a free concert in the park this weekend and a bunch of us are going. Are you interested? B: I wouldn’t miss it! Sign me up!

Dans ce même registre, vous auriez pu répondre: “I’m in” or “count me in“

The expression “I’m in” or “count me in” mean that you wish to be included in a proposed activity. For example: “I’m going to the bar. Anyone else coming?” “Count me in!”

Je vais simplement le soumettre à Diana pour approbation avant de le signer (noter : Si vous soumettez une idée ou un document à quelqu’un, vous lui en parlez ou le lui montrez pour obtenir son avis, son opinion).
3	If we deliver to site they will sign off for payment straight away and then call us back in to install once sites are ready. (notez: call us back in signifie en fait: “ils nous appellerons pour que nous revenions”… l’usage de “in” suffit à exprimer l’idée d’être présent. La construction “back in” est donc beaucoup plus simple que son équivalente en Français…) = voir (a) en bas de tableau.	Si nous livrons sur le site, ils signeront immédiatement pour le paiement et nous rappelleront pour l’installation lorsque les sites seront prêts,

Close Of Play / COP + Close Of Busines / COB

Vous lirez ou entendrez parfois l’expression: “within today”. Well, it is fine in itself — it is commonly used. Means that you have until the end of today to finish whatever task needs doing. I wouldn’t use this phrase myself but it is used by and intelligible to native speakers and is okay grammatically. “By the end of the day” is certainly more common.

Mais il y a une autre façon trés corporate de parler d’une échéance en fin de journée dans le “office jargon” c’est d’ajouter après la date désirée : “by close of play” («I want this report on my desk tomorrow (or today) by close of play») qui peut égalemen se décliner en «by close of business» et bien sûr, sous leur forme acronymique : «by COP » / « by COB».

1	We will have something by close of business tomorrow. The team will also have all financials through the quarter by mid-week so I will send a note to schedule our quarterly review.	Nous aurons quelque chose d’ici la fin de journée demain. L’équipe aura également toutes les données financières du trimestre en milieu de semaine et j’enverrai une note pour programmer notre revue trimestrielle.
2	If we get this by close of play Tuesday next week, when do you think we will start getting the equipment by (notez la construction: “when…by” avec “by” en fin de question = “d’ici quand, d’ici combien de temps?“) and over how many weeks will it take us to get all of it?	Si nous obtenons ces informations d’ici mardi prochain, quand pensez-vous que nous pourrons commencer à recevoir les équipements et combien de semaines nous faudra-t-il pour tout recevoir ?

to pack away

To pack sth away means to put something into a bag or container, or to put something in a safe place (where it is usually kept) to be used at a later time or to put something back into the container where it is stored, after you have finished using it.

Il y a donc une petite nuance entre “put away” et “pack away“. Le verbe à particule to put away signifie remettre à sa place dans le sens ranger (à l’endroit d’où on l’a pris). Par exemple un jouet d’enfant dans son placard ou qch qu’on aurait extrait de son emplacement pour le regarder de plus près et que l’on doit ensuite remettre à sa place. Therefore, if you are simply going to put the summer clothes back in a wardrobe, you would say ‘I have to put my summer clothes away’. Conversely, by using ‘pack’ you mean you are putting the summer clothes in suitcases or any other container for storage purposes.

1	It’s time to pack away your winter clothes.
2	Her grandmother’s dolls had been packed away in the attic for many years.
3	As ever, please don’t start to pack away until 4pm.
4	We packed away the picnic things and started up the engine.
5	Come on, children, it’s time to pack away your toys.
6	I’m packing away my maternity clothes in case we decide to have another baby sometime in the future.
7	I’m sorry, I already packed the toothpaste away for the trip. Isn’t there another tube somewhere?

Pack up

Pas très éloigné du phrasal verb précédent, to pack up doit d’abord se comprendre comme «faire ses valises» mais il peut aussi signifier «ne plus fonctionner». Dans ce sens, il se rapproche donc du verbe «to act up» = if a machine or part of your body acts up, it does not work properly “The computer is acting up again”. To act up s’utilise aussi pour parler d’un enfant qui se tient mal (= to behave badly) : “He’s a tough kid and he acts up a lot” or “The little girl was acting up, so her mother took her out of the restaurant” (notez: un enfant bien élevé se dit “well behaved”).

Voici donc les 3 significations à connaître (A et B étant assez proches) :

(A) to put things into cases, bags etc ready for a trip somewhere (= faire ses bagages, ses valises).

(B) put something into a box or other container, so that it can be moved, sold, or stored (= emballer, empaqueter, envelopper).

(C) British English informal if a machine packs up, it stops working because there is something wrong with it (SYN: to pack in) (= péter, casser)

1	Russia is stocking up on blood supplies (= faire des réserves de sang). I know first-hand that you don’t do these sorts of things for no reason (= “sans une bonne raison”). And you certainly don’t do them if you’re getting ready to pack up and go home (B).
2	Hi guys does anyone have a mac air book charger I can borrow for a couple of hours as my charger has packed up (= stop working) (C)
3	Most of the holidaymakers had packed up and gone (A)
4	I gave her a hand packing up her clothes and stuff (A)
5	Don’t worry. The removal men (= les déménageurs) will pack everything up (B)
6	The photocopier’s packed up again ! (C)
7	The product is likely to suffer a number of ‘minor’ breakdowns before it finally packs up (C)

Make a start (often + on)

To do the first part of something, to begin doing something. To set out to do something; to make a beginning on something.

Bien sûr, on pourrait tout aussi bien se contenter d’utiliser «to begin» ou «to start» mais n’oublions pas que nous sommes ici pour redonner du lustre à votre «Britrish Touch» !…

1	We can make a start now or first thing in the morning if that suits better? (notez: first thing in the morning signifie: demain matin on démarre par ça et rien d’autre)
2	Hi I can do any day really. How about Monday afternoon to make a start?
3	I will make a start on preparing sales collateral (support commercial) but won’t communicate anything out until I hear that technically all is well.
